How does this literature review support the analysis or further understanding of the problem statement? How do you intend to tell the story to the reader?

4.1 Literature review

Complete your literature review that analyzes or helps the reader understand your problem statement from back in

Weeks 1 and 2. The literature review paper should be a condensed, synthesized, narrative that integrates all of the literature you have reviewed in Week 2 as well as additional research relevant to your problem. Don’t merely list an article and describe it in one paragraph and then another in the next paragraph. Make it a narrative. Describe the studies and how they support what you want to examine in your topic. Think of this as a paper within a paper. You should provide an introduction and summary of your lit review. Include headings to organize the content.

Your literature review may be a fluid document as your focus changes and recommendations are received from your instructor. Continuously make additions, updates, and revisions to the Literature Review Matrix you created in Week 2.

Provide an updated Literature Review Matrix as an additional document uploaded along with the 4.1 Literature Review assignment this week.

Your literature review paper should include:
Title page formatted in APA.

Title heading as your introduction heading to the literature review. How does this literature review support the analysis or further understanding of the problem statement? How do you intend to tell the story to the reader?
Your clearly stated problem statement. Make any revisions following Weeks 1 and 2 if necessary.

Well-organized sections in the paper that review similar research studies used to explain or analyze the problem (review the Literature Review Tutorial). Include correctly formatted APA headings.

Conclusion

References – 10 minimum. They must be research articles. You already have 5 from Week 2.

What are the four valves found in the heart and where are they located? Give all names for each valve. What is a mitral valve prolapse and what causes this in Marfan’s syndrome specifically?

Heart

Janet was the tallest person in her family. Her brother used to joke with her and tell her she could play Abraham Lincoln in any play because she was tall and lanky just like good old Abe.

Janet was the star center on her high school basketball team. She had always been tall with big hands and long fingers, perfect for snagging the ball on rebounds. Recently, Janet had begun wearing contact lenses because she was having trouble seeing the hoop clearly. The optometrist had diagnosed her with nearsightedness, something that her parents also experienced.

Recently, while practicing basketball with her high school team, Janet experienced some pain in her chest. She mentioned this to her coach, but since it was the beginning of the season and they had recently started practicing, the coach assumed that she had pulled or overworked a muscle. The coach suggested that she take some Tylenol and apply ice to her chest to relieve the pain.

Five minutes in to their first game of the season, Janet experienced dizziness and motioned for the coach to take her out. As she walked to the bench, she lost consciousness and passed out. The referees couldn’t feel a pulse and started CPR while waiting for the paramedics and ambulance to arrive.

When Janet came to, she was in a hospital bed in CCU of the local hospital. The doctors advised her that she likely had a disease called Marfan’s syndrome. As a result of that disease she had experienced cardiac arrest and that she had a mitral valve prolapse.

Deliverables

Answer the following questions and save your responses in a Microsoft Word document. Provide a scholarly resource to support your answers.

What are the four valves found in the heart and where are they located? Give all names for each valve.
What is a mitral valve prolapse and what causes this in Marfan’s syndrome specifically?
What happens to blood flow (specifically) with a mitral valve prolapse (where would the blood back up to and why)?
If a person were to have a prolapse of the tricuspid valve, what specifically would happen to the flow of blood in that case?
Do you think Janet will ever play basketball again? Why or why not?

What is the relation between ethics and religion? What would an emotivism say to appraise what you determine is the ethical form of conduct? Would a natural law ethicist agree with what you say is the ethical form of conduct? Why or why not?

Religion and ethics

Review the following ethical dilemmas:

John Doe has decided to clone himself. He is sterile. He cannot find anyone to marry him. He wishes to have children. He knows that he will not be able to love a child that is adopted or not connected directly to him biologically. He will be making use of a new procedure that involves taking his skin cells to produce a twin. The twin starts out as an embryo and grows into a child. The child in this case will have the same genetic information as John Doe. John Doe and his child will be twins.
Jane Doe is eighteen. For as long as she can remember she has been sexually attracted to other females. Her parents belong to a religion that has a religious text stating that God forbids one to be a lesbian. This religion goes on further to say that lesbians will be punished in the afterlife. Jane Doe is debating whether she should tell her parents about her sexual attraction. She has not yet decided if she should come out to her parents and live as a lesbian now that she is a legal adult.
Joe and Mary are a couple. Before becoming sterile, they had a child. This child died of a rare disease. Joe and Mary miss their child terribly. They have heard that there is a new IVF procedure that can ensure that they can have another child. However, their religion forbids using IVF.
Use the resources assigned for this week and additional research,

Instructions
Select two of the situations above and then address 2 of the following:

What is the relation between ethics and religion? Formulate and investigate the relation.
For each case, determine the ethical path of conduct. Then, determine what paths of conduct would be unethical
For each case, what would an emotivism say to appraise what you determine is the ethical form of conduct?
For each case, would a natural law ethicist agree with what you say is the ethical form of conduct? Why or why not?
Articulate, explain, and evaluate in each case an approach that makes use of divine command ethics.

What would a divine command ethicist say is the moral thing to do here? Why would they say that? Do you agree with the divine command ethics? Why or why not? Evaluate what a natural law ethicist would say is right to do. Do you agree with them? Why or why not?

Discussion 2

Initial Post Instructions
St. Augustine in the 5th Century held that we are free to make choices in life. This is the idea of free will. It may seem at first glance odd for a religious thinker to say that we have free will. After all, if God exists, then God created all things. God knows already what we will do. God can cause anything to occur. If we cause things to occur, that seems to be a limitation on the power of God and not make God all-powerful.

There are also religion traditions that say that we have no free will. There are some theologians in Islam who seem to suggest that is true. In order for this line of reasoning to hold true, one would need to believe free will is an illusion and that we have no control over how we live our lives, but rather that we are puppets moving and acting due to God’s will and the powers of destiny and fate. And if this then in the case, how can we possibly be responsible for our actions?

The considerations above show us to what degree our religious beliefs can shape us. For instance, someone who believes in free will may experience way more guilt than someone who believes we don’t have free will and thus aren’t responsible for the choices (and consequences) of the actions we take.

Personal struggles with religion and ethics occur in many places, including in the healthcare arena. Consider the following: You are a nurse in a hospital. A 12 year-old was brought to the hospital by an ambulance. The parents have just arrived at the hospital. This 12 year-old has lost a large amount of blood and requires a transfusion. The parents happen to be members of a religion that believes that blood transfusions are immoral. They want to remove the child from the hospital and prevent the transfusion even if it means the death of the child. You have to decide whether or not you will participate in an action that violates the will of the parents and aid in providing blood for the child. If you choose to participate, and even if you are able to legally justify it, you have to think about the distress you are creating for the parents. If you refuse to aid here, you may be subject to retaliation from the hospital. What is the moral thing for the nurse to do here?

Initial Post Instructions
For the initial post, address the following questions:

What would a divine command ethicist say is the moral thing to do here? Why would they say that? Do you agree with the divine command ethics? Why or why not?
Evaluate what a natural law ethicist would say is right to do. Do you agree with them? Why or why not?
Given what you said are the right things to do, what would an emotivist say about your positions and judgments? What role does subjectivity play here in determining what is ethical?

Explain the deficiencies in Patel’s report as drafted. There are at least 15 deficiencies. Identify only one deficiency in their original post and then respond to at least two other students posts sometime during the week.

Financial statements

Patel, CPA, has completed the audit of the financial statements of Bellamy Corporation as of and for the year ended December 31, 2019. Patel also audited and reported on the Bellamy financial statements for the prior year. Patel drafted the following report for 2019.

We have audited the balance sheet and statements of income and retained earnings of Bellamy Corporation as of December 31, 2019. We conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of misstatement.

We believe that our audits provide a reasonable basis for our opinion.

In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly the financial position of Bellamy Corporation as of December 31, 2019, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted auditing standards, applied on a basis consistent with those of the preceding year.

Patel, CPA

(Signed)

Here are some other pertinent facts about the audit:

Bellamy is a private corporation and is presenting comparative financial statements.
Bellamy does not wish to present a statement of cash flows for either year.
During 2019, Bellamy changed its method of accounting for long-term construction contracts and properly reflected the effect of the change in the current year’s financial statements and restated the prior year’s statements. Patel is satisfied with Bellamy’s justification for making the change. The change is discussed in the footnotes to the financial statements.
Patel was unable to perform normal accounts receivable confirmation procedures, but alternative procedures were used to satisfy Patel as to the existence of the receivables.
Bellamy Corporation is the defendant in a litigation, the outcome of which is highly uncertain. If the case is settled in favor of the plaintiff, Bellamy will be required to pay a substantial amount of cash, which might require the sale of certain fixed assets. The litigation and the possible effects have been properly disclosed in the footnotes to the financial statements.
Bellamy issued bonds on January 31, 2018, in the amount of $10 million. The funds obtained from the issuance were used to finance the expansion of plant facilities. The bond agreement restricts the payment of future cash dividends to earnings after December 31, 2023. Bellamy declined to disclose this essential data in the footnotes to the financial statements.
Required:

Explain the deficiencies in Patel’s report as drafted. There are at least 15 deficiencies. Each student should identify only one deficiency in their original post and then respond to at least two other students posts sometime during the week. You can agree or disagree with other students but make sure you explain why you agree or disagree.

Your original post is due by 5:00 pm on Saturday and your reply to at least 2 other student’s posts are due by 5:00pm on Monday. You will not be able to view other student’s posts until you create your own original threaded response.

Discussion board topics are worth a total of 100 points for each discussion board assignment. The following points are what is looked for in your original posts to the discussion board and your replies to other students’ postings:

Original Posting (60 points)
Relation of new information to old information learned in the course (or other related business courses) to date.
Relation of information in article or reading to personal experience.
The use of proper grammar, complete sentences, lack of misspelled words.
The response answers all questions asked and is on topic.
The original post was made in time for others to read and respond. Your original post is due by 5:00pm on Saturday and your reply to at least 2 other student’s posts are due by 5:00pm on Monday. The whole point of a discussion board is to have discussion with your classmates throughout the week just as you would have in a face to face class.
Discussion at a critical level, not just recitation of facts from the article.
Note: Discussion at a critical level means discussing things such as your opinion of the point mentioned, why you hold that opinion, what you see wrong with point mentioned, how you see the point consistent/inconsistent with what you have learned so far, implications for the future, consistencies/inconsistencies within the article or reading itself, and so forth. In other words, you should analyze the good and/or bad aspects of each discussion board activity and justifying your analysis. Do not just tell me what the article or reading states … I already know this.

Reply to Two Others’ Postings (40 points total – 20 points for each):
Discuss one point you like/agree with, and one point you dislike/disagree with, and why. (Do not just post “I agree” as this will not count as a valid reply post and will not be graded or awarded points.)
There is a response to at least two other student’s original posts by the due date.
If your original post and/or replies are not posted through Canvas by the due date you will receive a zero on the assignment – absolutely no exceptions. No late postings will be graded.
