Microbial Case Study

Review the Naurú Idalia and Bernardo article in the Study Materials and respond to the following questions regarding E. coli. All sources must be cited in APA Style.

Your response should total at least 500 words in length.

1. Discuss one important discovery that has involved the use of E. coli.

2. Discuss two reasons why E. coli is so commonly used in biomedical research.

3. Table 1 lists several databases involving E. coli. Choose one, visit the site, and report what you have found.

4. Define a bacterial plasmid. How is this different from the chromosomal DNA?

5. One example of genomic studies to E. coli is the Keio collection, which has mutated all E. coli genes. This study found that 4288 could be deleted without killing the bacteria. How many of these genes were essential for E. coli to survive and function? How many of them have unknown functions?

6.Describe an example of how E. coli could be used as a biosensor. Discuss what the molecule would be that the E. coli is sensing and how the bacteria would respond after binding to the molecule.

7. What is synthetic biology? What is the source of synthesized DNA?

8. How has the use of synthetically modified E. coli been beneficial to the perfume industry?

What are the business decisions (albeit simple ones) you should be thinking about?

Lemonade Stand

Dialogue 1 – Starting Your Lemonade Stand Empire

You are nine years old. It is a hot summer day and you want to start up a lemonade stand on your front lawn. What are the business decisions (albeit simple ones) you should be thinking about? Let us consider the decisions a nine-year-old would need to make, and link those decisions to business decisions required to be made in a major corporation.

Identify the performance that you have selected. Describe the staging, lighting, costumes, and characters of the performance. How do these match or revise the written version of the play?

Play

Instructions

Plays are meant to be performed, rather than read. The purpose of dramatic arts often extends far beyond the words written on a page; staging, lighting, costumes intonation, expression, and audience experience are all part of the experience of a theatrical production. To develop your understanding of the cultural role of the dramatic arts, you will view a production of a play this week and write a reflection to explain your viewing experience. Choose a play that you would like to view and find a version online, YouTube, DVD or iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc. You can also choose to see a play live if you prefer.

Play Suggestions:

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Romeo and Juliet

As You Like It

Taming of the Shrew

The Tempest

Much Ado About Nothing

The Comedy of Errors

Macbeth

King Lear

Select and address one of the following options:

Option 1: Write an analysis of the play that you viewed. Include at least one quote from the play in your essay. In your essay, address the following:

Identify the performance that you have selected.

Describe the staging, lighting, costumes, and characters of the performance. How do these match or revise the written version of the play? You do not need to read the entire play, but you should skim the text.

What type of mood and tone does the performance create? How?

What parts of the play are easier to understand through performance? What are some details that stood out through performance?

What are your feelings about this performance? What did you take away from viewing it?

Option 2: Find an adaptation or transformation of a play. Choose an adaptation with some significant differences from the original, such as transposed plots and characters into a variety of different settings and historical contexts. Here are some examples:

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999) or A Midsummer Night’s DREAM (2018)

Romeo and Juliet – Romeo + Juliet (1996) or West Side Story (1961) or Romeo Must Die (2000)

As You Like It – As You Like It (2006)

Taming of the Shrew – 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) or Kiss Me, Kate (1948)

Much Ado About Nothing – Much Ado About Nothing (2012)

The Comedy of Errors – The Bomb-itty of Errors (2012)

King Lear – A Thousand Acres (1997)

Othello – O (2001)

Hamlet – The Lion King (2019 or 1994) or Hamlet (2000)

Twelfth Night – She’s the Man (2006)

If you have another idea, please ask your instructor to approve it.

Watch the original version and the adapted version. In your essay, address the following:

How is the adaptation the same as the original? Discuss plot, characters, theme, conflict, language, etc.

How does the adaptation differ from the original? Discuss setting, time period, characters, plot, language, etc.

Does the original story translate well in the adaptation? Why or why not? Did the adaptation work in a different setting, time period, etc. Why or why not?

Why do you think Shakespeare’s plays are adapted so often?

Questions to be answered

Question 1. Describe in detail the pathways for engineering functional CO2 -concentrating mechanisms into plant chloroplasts.

Question 2. This question is in two parts, each carrying equal marks.

(a) The formal definitions for metabolite identifications have been defined by the Metabolite Standards Initiative.  With particular reference to the identification of tryptophan using GC-MS discuss how Level 2 identification is achieved and how this can be improved to Level 1.

(b) Now that you know you can detect tryptophan with GC-MS; how can its level in a yeast culture be quantified?

Question 3. This question involves genetic engineering and is in three parts, each carrying equal marks.

(a) Describe the principles of the ‘maquette’ approach to de novo protein design.

(b) Describe in vitro compartmentalisation used in directed evolution experiments. What are the advantages of using this technique over in vivo experiments?

Evaluate the potential resistance from stakeholders. Discuss the reasons for the resistance, at what point the resistance will likely occur, and some strategies for overcoming the resistance.

Implementing Change

In order for managers to respond effectively to environmental or organizational pressures that can be disruptive to an organization, they must implement clear intervention strategies. In a 1,000-1250 word paper, propose a change plan to respond to the most significant pressures affecting the organization represented in your Pressures for Change assignment from Topic 2. Include the following:

Review the organizational/environmental pressures you presented in your initial paper: Determine which pressure is most important to address at this time in order to maintain a competitive and viable company. Summarize the pressure and how the organization is currently being affected. Project the outcome for the organization if it fails to address the pressure.

Develop a change vision to respond to the organizational or environmental pressure: The vision must define the organizational change and resonate with the decision making and strategies proposed in the paper. Additionally, the vison must include a cognitive and affective component in order to help stakeholders understand how to achieve the goals, and to inspire and motivate them to engage in the change.

Develop a change model to implement your change vision. Identify the specific steps needed to implement a change and effectively respond to the pressure. Describe a strategy for implementing each step.

Evaluate the potential resistance from stakeholders. Discuss the reasons for the resistance, at what point the resistance will likely occur, and some strategies for overcoming the resistance.

How do you think planned obsolescence effects globalization? Do you believe Leavitt’s argument about globalization after you read about planned obsolescence? Why or why not?

The Globalization of Markets

For this paper, you need to read “The Globalization of Markets” also due this week. In this essay, the author, Theodore Leavitt argues that globalization will allow businesses to make high quality, low cost goods. But that claim is challeged by a business practice that had been in place for over 50 years before 1983 when “Globalization of Markets” was written: planned obsolesence.

Go to this Wikipedia page to read about planned obsolescence (you can stop at the “law and regulations” section–you don’t need to read that if you don’t want).

Then, for this paper, apply this idea of planned obsolescence to the idea of globalization as Leavitt describes it in “The Globalization of Markets”. You could do this by considering one or both the questions below:

How do you think planned obsolescence effects globalization?
Do you believe Leavitt’s argument about globalization after you read about planned obsolescence? Why or why not?

Make sure to use quotes from both the essay and Wikipedia page to make your argument.
