Compare and contrast the two secondary sources provided (the Vox video and the scholarly article by Macdonald and Scherf). explain which of the two sources help you understand the novel better and why.

Frankenstein

This paper is both about the novel Frankenstein and about understanding various kinds of secondary sources that are available about the novel.

In a 600-750 word essay, compare and contrast the two secondary sources provided (the Vox video and the scholarly article by Macdonald and Scherf). You should use the week’s lecture as well as the quiz to help you understand the two sources and identify the correct vocabulary to use when writing about them. Here are some other ideas to help you out:

– For your thesis (main argument) statement, explain which of the two sources help you understand the novel better and why. Of course you may say both do for different reasons, and explain those reasons.

– You can focus part of your essay on explaining the differences between popular and scholarly sources. Use quotations or references to the two sources to help you.

– Find some quotations from Volume I of Frankenstein that support your ideas or help you understand one or both of the secondary sources, and integrate these into your essay

discuss the ways in which the material from this semester speaks to issues in your own life or those of someone you know. In your response you may wish to consider how much gender roles have changed over time or how much they’ve remained the same.

Only use the sorces given to write this essay.

In an essay of approximately 750-1,000 words draw connections between three (3) of the readings from this course. The readings MUST be from different course units (Units I-IV). You should consider tracing shared themes, similarities between cultures or events depicted/discussed, and so on. For example, you may wish to focus on marriage and family roles; or you could center your analysis on women’s bodies (birth control and reproduction); or you could discuss women’s economic roles (what kind of work women did in their respective cultures/economies); or you could focus on women’s roles in religion or the spiritual life of the community; and women’s role in the state/governance/politics is always a good topic for discussion. There are so many possibilities! In the end, however, the choice is yours.

In your final paragraph, discuss the ways in which the material from this semester speaks to issues in your own life or those of someone you know. In your response you may wish to consider how much gender roles have changed over time or how much they’ve remained the same.

Overall, keep your focus narrow and precise. Successful essays typically have a logical and coherent structure; paragraphs with strong, controlling topic sentences and relevant supporting evidence; and as few grammatical and compositional errors as possible. No work cited page required but make sure you use parenthetical citations whenever quoting or paraphrasing.

Identify the current outcome in Mila’s life story and propose a rationale for changing this outcome. Apply either Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory or Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory to Mila’s life to create a hypothesis as to how and why these outcomes would likely adjust due to the changes you have made.

PSY605: Mila Singer Life Story

Review the PSY605: Mila Singer Life Story Download PSY605: Mila Singer Life Storydocument. Choose one aspect of Mila’s life to alter. This element can be an event, a personal characteristic, an environmental factor, or an aspect of the timeline. In your initial post, identify the original life story element you intend to change and explain how you intend to change it. Use Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development to explain Mila’s stage of development at the time this change takes place and address how the change affects Mila’s psychological development into adulthood.

After identifying the initial change and describing it, create a list of three additional outcomes in Mila’s development across the lifespan that will likely be affected by this change. For each, identify the current outcome in Mila’s life story and propose a rationale for changing this outcome. Apply either Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory or Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory to Mila’s life to create a hypothesis as to how and why these outcomes would likely adjust due to the changes you have made.

Briefly summarize your personal reaction(s) to making the initial change and how it altered the subsequent outcomes. Explain how differences in life events create differences in human development.

Here is the story.

PSY605: Mila Singer Life Story

Mila was born in 1945 in a hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents, Miriam and Leo Lucas, were both in their early twenties when she was born. Mila was the first person in her Jewish-American family to be born in America. Miriam and Leo had escaped Germany as young children with their own parents just as the persecution of Jews was beginning in Europe in the early 1930s. Miriam was a stay-at-home mother, and Leo worked for his father’s successful construction company. Mila spent her pre-school years playing with the other children in their primarily Jewish neighborhood and helping her mother keep up with housework. Once she was old enough, Mila began attending a primary school in the New York City public school system. Her parents had five more children during
the next nine years. The family was not wealthy; however, they always had enough financial stability to provide Mila with everything she needed, if not everything she wanted. Mila’s parents constantly encouraged Mila and her siblings to value education and use it to their advantage. Because of this, Mila performed very well in school. Mila was tall and had a lean figure, beautiful brown eyes, and long curly brown hair that often attracted the attention of the boys in her
classes. However, her strict religious upbringing caused her to ignore any advances she received. Mila took her religious education very seriously and loved going to Hebrew School to learn the Hebrew language and prepare for her Bat Mitzvah. It was in Hebrew School that she met Oliver Singer, the young man who would later become her husband. Mila and Oliver were married in a traditional Jewish ceremony in 1965 and took up residence in a
neighborhood just minutes away from both their families. Oliver began attending a local college in hope of becoming a pediatrician. Mila went to work as a secretary for her father, who was priming her younger brothers to take over the construction company once they finished school. Mila and Oliver had two sons: Oliver, Jr. (born in 1966), and Elliot (born in 1968). When her mother died of lung cancer in 1968, Mila’s family moved back in with her father and youngest siblings. Mila found that the burden of caring for everyone made it impossible to continue working. Shortly after Elliot was born, Mila left her job and Oliver was forced to leave school so he could begin working and supporting the family financially. Oliver decided to join the family business and worked alongside his brothers-in-law for many years, even after Mila’s father died in 1986. Mila, Oliver, and their children lived a humble life, much as Mila’s parents had. Although the family worked hard and always had what they needed, they never became as prosperous as Oliver had dreamed when he began college. As he got older, Oliver became bitter about how his life had unfolded and turned to drinking to cover his emotions. During this period, Mila pleaded with Oliver to seek help for his addiction, but he refused. Their relationship suffered, and Mila often felt depressed. She, too, neglected to reach out for help for her problem. In 1999, Oliver died from complications of liver disease. He was only 54 years old. Not wanting to be alone, Mila decided at that time to leave Brooklyn and relocate to a small condo in Atlanta, Georgia, to be close to her son, Elliot, and his family. Although she missed her husband, she was admittedly happy to be removed from the unhealthy living situation of their combined troubles. It was a difficult transition at first; having spent her whole life in Brooklyn, Mila never learned to drive, and getting around the Atlanta suburbs without a car was nearly impossible. Over time, however, Mila met other widows and couples her age and began attending local events with her new friends.

PSY605: Mila Singer Life Story
Earlier this year, Mila sold her condo and moved in to a retirement community in the area so she could be closer to her friends and avoid travelling to participate in social functions. A Jewish temple is located near her new residence, so Mila can still enjoy an active religious affiliation and sense of community with her like-minded peers. Elliot and his family come over once a week for a short visit. Oliver, Jr. and his family visit two or three times a year. Overall, Mila is very satisfied with how her life turned out and acknowledges that the “bumps in the road,” as she likes to call them, helped her to appreciate everything she has today. While she is beginning to decline physically, she maintains that she is still “sharp as a whip” and enjoys giving back to the community by passing her knowledge on to the youth who visit the retirement community. Mila looks forward to her sunset years.

In what ways do current debates in the United States over birth control, reproduction, and women’s bodies echo those of the early twentieth century as explored in the unit readings? What does this tell us about how far women have come in terms of controlling their own bodies?

Answer the following questions only using the sorces given

1. According to Karen Offen, most nineteenth-century feminists argued that “women, as the peace-loving sex, had specific qualities and talents from which the entire society could benefit . . . ” (333). In other words, feminists advocated for greater civil and civic power for women based on women’s essential differences from men rather than their essential sameness. In what ways does this limit the chances of their cause succeeding yet at the same time aid feminists in pushing for greater control over their own lives? Put another way, are claims based on traditional notions of womanhood ultimately self-defeating, or are they pragmatic calculations given the cultural realities of the 19th century? Explain your answer and keep your focus on the situation discussed in the reading. Were the women successful? To what extent?

2. Sandi Cooper argues that World War I gave rise to a heightened state interest in rebuilding families that took two different approaches. According to the Cooper reading, what were these approaches and what claims can be made for why a state would adopt one approach and not another?

3. In what ways do current debates in the United States over birth control, reproduction, and women’s bodies echo those of the early twentieth century as explored in the unit readings? What does this tell us about how far women have come in terms of controlling their own bodies? Be specific and make explicit references to pertinent sections from the readings.

4. Simone de Beauvoir asks, “How can a human being in woman’s situation attain fulfillment? What roads are open to her? Which are blocked? How can independence be recovered in a state of dependency? What circumstances limit woman’s liberty and how can they be overcome?” Though she was writing in the 1940s are any of these questions still relevant today? If so, which ones and why? If not, explain your response.

What domestic intelligence collection efforts would be best utilized on the organization you selected? Which members of the IC would be the best collectors of intelligence on this particular organization within the country?

Domestic Intelligence

1. Introduction:

Develop a research paper to address domestic intelligence collection and analysis of your selected terrorist group from your Red Cell Midterm Assignment. Building on the information that you started in your midterm, prepare a new research paper that addresses which intelligence collection disciplines and agencies are essential to effectively collect on and analyze information about the red cell threat you chose in 5-7 full pages of content (not counting title or reference pages).

2. Domestic Intelligence Collection and Analysis:

Specify the most effective intelligence collection and analysis methods against the terrorist organization likely to conduct an attack within the United States that you selected by clearing answering all 3 of the following:

A) What domestic intelligence collection efforts would be best utilized on the organization you selected? (Intelligence Collection disciplines discussed in week 5) Do not focus on overseas intelligence collection programs; this is an HLSS course and we are focused ONLY on collection within the U.S. homeland.

B) Which members of the IC would be the best collectors of intelligence on this particular organization within the country? (the intelligence and law enforcement agencies of the intelligence community we discussed in week 2) You may address agencies that collect overseas and within the homeland as the terrorism nexus overlaps both domains. You may also consider some of the field agencies of DHS (since DHS I&A is just an office and does not collect) as some of the operating components do collect like ICE, CBP, USCG, and the Secret Service (who does focus on terrorism financing). Again, this is a Homeland Security course, so focus on the agencies that can support the homeland (like the FBI), NOT primarily overseas intelligence collection of foreign targets. Clearly focus your paper only on domestic intelligence and law enforcement and remember the CIA does not collect intelligence on Americans domestically, they are a foreign intelligence agency (as are ALL of the military intelligence branches). See the readings from week 5 as well as this link to Executive Order 12333 (2008) https://fas.org/irp/offdocs/eo/eo-12333-2008.pdf. However, the NSA is very different as they can and do collect both foreign and domestic communications (when authorized by a court [like FISA] or under certain conditions by the Attorney General to support the FBI). See https://www.nsa.gov/about/faqs/sigint-faqs.shtml

C) What intelligence analysis strategies would be the most effective and why? (choose only from the analytical strategies discussed in the week 6 lesson and specifically the reading A tradecraft primer: Structured analytic techniques for improving intelligence analysis or found at this link https://www.hsdl.org/?abstract&did=20945). Remember that critical thinking (brainstorming) and situational logic DO NOT in themselves constitute an analytical approach — be specific and pick at least two specific strategies you think will help analyze what can be collected on a clandestine terrorist group attempting to attack the U.S. homeland.

Note: Only focus here in this progress paper on intelligence collection disciplines, the most appropriate IC agencies to play a role, and the most effective analytical techniques to employ in this scenario. As a paper for this HLSS course, these questions are to be answered as it relates to collecting and analyzing intelligence on the terrorist group plans and activities within the U.S. as they prepare to attack. Do not address how to stop this attack, that will be the topic of your recommendations in your final paper due in week 7. That final paper will address what law enforcement and security officials here in the homeland can do to detect, identify, and warn on and potentially stop the hypothetical attack. You should readdress your hypothetical attack from your midterm using only a paragraph or two (unless you were specifically told that you did not address the attack in sufficient detail in your midterm).
