i) Arguments

These need to be well structured (tell a story). Most points you make will probably not be novel but try to express your own (supported) ideas as well. Avoid unsupported opinion.

ii) Evidence to support your arguments:

This will usually involve describing the relevant scientific and other research findings. Several studies have shown significant correlations between essay grade and number of citations.

iii) Critical evaluation

A good answer to psychology essay questions will always include a critical evaluation of arguments and evidence. Critical evaluation is a process of weighing up the evidence for and against particular ideas or propositions.

Research your assigned general and provide a list of five lines of evidence that support your assigned theory. Make sure to provide parenthetical references to the source from which your line of evidence came.

The Roles of Strong Military Generals in Roman History

Since our very first lecture, we have discussed the importance of a strong military persona for several Roman leaders. Roman kings sought to achieve military prestige through successful campaigns and the celebration of triumphs. These features continued throughout the Republic, which saw able-bodied military commanders use the Republican system of governance as a tool to achieve their personal ambitions. It was these types of leaders that enacted the collapse of the Republic and foundation of the Roman empire. Below, we will take a comprehensive look at three military leaders and discuss their impact on Roman history

Assignment Requirements

1. Research your assigned general and provide a list of five lines of evidence that support your assigned theory. Make sure to provide parenthetical references to the source from which your line of evidence came.

• Lucius Cornelius Sulla was the most important Roman general that categorically changed the trajectory of Roman history through his actions, innovations, and interactions with fellow Romans. [Last name begins with G-L]

2. Research the other generals and provide a list of five lines of evidence that go against any one of the others. Make sure to provide parenthetical references to the source from which your line of evidence came.

• Gaius Marius was the most important Roman general that categorically changed the trajectory of Roman history through his actions, innovations, and interactions with fellow Romans.

• Gaius Julius Caesar was the most important Roman general that categorically changed the trajectory of Roman history through his actions, innovations, and interactions with fellow Romans.

• Octavian/Augustus was the most important Roman general that categorically changed the trajectory of Roman history through his actions, innovations, and interactions with fellow Romans.

3. You may or may not agree with your assigned general. Write a paragraph (3-5 good sentences) explaining your personal perspective on the impact of these Roman generals on subsequent Roman culture.

When I did the last one of these it was 2 pages on the dot.

Choose a poem and, write a few sentences saying what the poem says. Whats your perspective on how the poet’s language impacts the meaning and feeling of the poem.

Response: Scorpion…: Auden, Bishop, Brooks, Césaire, Lowell

Each response should consist of two sections of writing that total roughly 250 words,

For the response, choose a poem (or section of a poem) and, for the first section, write a few sentences saying what the poem says. (In other words, if the poet wasn’t writing with rhymes or poetic language but instead was just speaking plainly, what would the words be? This portion is like “translating” the poem into plain and/or spoken language.)

Then the second section should be your perspective on how the poet’s language impacts the meaning and feeling of the poem. Try to use some of the terms we learn in class, like alliteration, or slant rhyme, or kinds of meter (like iambic, for example). Obviously, the more we talk about things in class, the more terms you’ll know. Just do your best for now!
