Flood Zone Mapping Project

Background Information:
Coastal areas are heavily developed in New Jersey placing pressure on emergency managers to prepare for evacuating residents during a Hurricane or other storm. GIS is a
planning tool to help prepare, respond, and mitigate the effects of natural disasters.

Target Audience:
Town officials have invited you to present at one of their meetings to demonstrate the use and benefits of GIS for storm planning. The town is concerned with flooding and want to know which areas will flood from a 1% Annual Chance Flood, also commonly referred to as a 100year flood. The town wants to review evacuation routes and would like a recommendation for shelter locations.

Work Outline:
Project Goal: A Category 2 Hurricane is approaching New Jersey. Identify which areas could flood during this storm, and estimate the population affected. Determine the
placement of potential shelters and identify the best evacuation routes.
Data Provided: Basemap data for the project is in the Files section of Canvas for ENVR126 then FloodProject folder. These are zipped shapefiles and can be uploaded in any GIS application including ArcGIS Pro. Potential features to sketch: Evacuation routes, Food and Water drop locations, properties to recommend for preservations, road closures, pollution issues. (You do not need to create all of these layers, pick 2 of these or other feature ideas to add points of interest to the map.)

Project Timeline:
The project will start March 22nd 2022, and is expected to take 2 class lab sessions, due March 29th.

Project Deliverables:

A presentation (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.) like the following:

Slide 1 Title slide (your name, town etc.)

Slide 2 Map of the town, zoom into the extents of the town selected. Add the MunicipalBoundary layer to show the political boundaries.

Slide 3 Map of the FEMA_FloodZones in your town.

Slide 4 Map showing the Population according to the Census Blocks in 2020 Change the appearance of the layer and identify a polygon that may be affected by flooding. Field named Pop100 contains the Total Population for that Block Group

Slide 5 Map of Shelter locations and other facilities such as School Property, Hospitals, Fire and First Aid Stations. Are any of these facilities in a Flood Zone?

Slide 6 Map of features your team would recommend to the citizens and officials in your town. Examples: Field stations, flooded and proposed evacuation routes…

Last Slide Conclusions of your project evaluating the use of GIS in emergency management within your town during major flood events. List any recommendations you have for the town officials on how to improve evacuation routes, prepare shelters or identify areas and houses in the flood plain that should be returned to a natural state

Describe the aim(s) of the program or intervention based on information publicly available in resources such as brochures or information on websites. Do not approach the staff of such programs for more information. Describe the target population of the program or intervention and describe the techniques and activities used.

Critical Review of a Social Services Program or Intervention for Children, Adolescents and/or Families

The purpose of this critical review is to develop your skills in research, evaluation and presentation of ideas. You are to draw from current peer-reviewed research and other suitable sources (e.g., books, government reports) and present written material in APA 7th edition format.

This assignment has two parts:
1. A 1000-word critical review of the effectiveness of programs of this type (not necessarily your program specifically) and identification of the factors that influence the program’s effectiveness. This is worth 20% of your final mark.
2. A small oral presentation to be pre-recorded and uploaded with your assignment. This is worth 5% of your final mark.

1. The Critical Review
You are required to identify and critically review a social service program or intervention that is psychologically based and directed toward improving the quality of life for children, adolescents and/or families. You may choose a program running in your own local area or a program that operates anywhere in Australia. Examples of programs that have been
evaluated by students in the past are:

  •  Big Brothers/Big Sisters mentoring program
  •  DAYS program for youth at risk of alcohol or drug abuse.
  •  Triple P Stepping Stones for parents with children who have a disability.
  •  Young Parents Program for young teenage mothers.

Here is a proposed structure for the critical review:

Describe the program:
Describe the aim(s) of the program or intervention based on information publicly available in resources such as brochures or information on websites. Do not approach the staff of such programs for more information.
Describe the target population of the program or intervention and describe the techniques and activities used.
Describe the anticipated outcomes of the program.

Select 4-7 relevant references.

Summarise the overall findings of the research and identify the strengths and/or weaknesses of the research.
Describe the main factors/variables that are responsible for change and mechanisms by which they lead to change. Describe what are the outcomes of success and how are these measured. Critically evaluate how past research is relevant to the program or intervention:
Explain if and how past research informs and supports the program or intervention in terms of:

  • o The main factors/variables responsible for change
  • o The mechanisms of change for a successful outcome
  • o The outcomes/indicators of success

If there is insufficient information available, then offer a suggestion for what research should be done.

Conclusion:
Conclude whether the program is effective, partially effective, not effective, or unable to be determined.
Comment on the implications for research and practice.

The Danger of a Single Story

Response Essay #1: Responding to “The Danger of a Single Story”

We’ve been discussing the idea of perception and how there is often more than one side to a story. As you watch this Ted talk keep that in mind. What does she mean by a single story being dangerous? What is the best way to combat it?

In this response essay, your job is to explain what the speaker is trying to get the audience to understand. What is the main idea behind her talk? How can you connect this to a wider audience or to your own life?

How would the use of the Roy Adaptation Model assist the nurse in planning the continuation of care for Sgt. Johns? Describe the influence of Roy’s Theory in guiding the nurse’s actions in promoting Sgt. Johns adjusted self-concept.

Roy and Neuman

Assignment description to discuss the following…

Sgt. Eddie Johns leaned back against the chair in the outpatient orthopedic clinic. His head was killing him! He wasn’t sure which was worse, the “morning after” headache or not being able to sleep at night. At least when he had a few beers under his belt so he could catch a few hours of sleep. It had been like this since he was air evacuated back stateside from Afghanistan after the roadside bomb went off. He was thankful that he had only broken his leg in a couple of places and gotten a bad bump on the head. They called that traumatic brain injury but he didn’t know what that was and really didn’t believe them anyway. He was still thinking just fine. His friend Joe wasn’t so lucky! How was Joe going to learn to walk on those artificial legs? He was still in the hospital in Washington, DC. That was pretty far from his home. Eddie wished he could visit Joe. They had been in the same platoon for 9 months. But, Eddie was glad that he had been able to come back to his own home town for outpatient treatment. It took an hour to get here but at least he could see his girl almost every day. Sure he had moved back in with his mom but it was easier to have someone to help him get around and cook for him. It was a bummer that he couldn’t work right now. He guessed it didn’t matter much since he really didn’t have a job to go back to. He had been replaced at the plant. They said they would find something for him to do once he could get around more easily. Eddie sure hoped the doc would take the pins out of his leg today and give him a clearance to work.

• How would the use of the Roy Adaptation Model assist the nurse in planning the continuation of care for Sgt. Johns?

• Describe the influence of Roy’s Theory in guiding the nurse’s actions in promoting Sgt. Johns adjusted self-concept.

• From the perspective of the Roy Adaptation Model, why is it important for the nurse to listen to Sgt. Johns’ “story” in his own words and not just base her interactions on information from the chart, fellow colleagues, or his family?

• Based on Neuman System’s Model, identify at least 4 stressors from the case study. Create a plan of care based on Neuman Systems Model for Sgt. Johns.

The following specifications are required for this assignment:

• Write a 1000 -1500 word APA paper addressing each of the following points. answers must thoroughly address the questions in a clear, concise way.

Screen Cast videos 12.8 and 12.8.2

Preparation

To prepare for this discussion, follow along with our Screen Cast videos 12.8 and 12.8.2 to make sure you can generate all of the required results.

Required SPSS Videos

    1. Stats 3e Screencast 12.8 (shows how to get a One-Way Anova from the “compare means” menu)
    2. Stats 3e Screencast 12.8.2 (shows how to get the same results but from the GLM (general linear model) menu)
      1. This should be further evidence that Anova is a special case of the general linear model.  You will learn more about that later in our class.
      2. Pay special attention to the mention of the “power” result which is available through the GLM command and which our speaker notes is an estimate of what percent of samples would yield a significant result IF there was a true effect in the population.  This is interesting because in the video example, that percent is about 61, which is relatively low power
    3. Use this NICE video (click here) to see how to calculate EFFECT SIZE for the One-Way Anova (Eta squared, partial Eta Squared).  This will also require that you use the steps in video 12.8.2 as the way to generate your One-Way Anova
Optional papers and videos for interpreting SPSS One Way Anova output tables
  1. [Paper] Analysis of variance (ANOVA) comparing means of more than two groups” (click here)
  2. There are any number of youtube videos for interpreting One-Way Anova tables, so if you want to hear more, go to Youtube and take your pick.  Videos use different versions of SPSS, but the main theory for reading the ouptut is the same.
  3. A power-point presentation (click here) on running and interpreting One-Way Anova in SPSS

Mini-Report Instructions

Welcome to our third mini-report.  Now that you have some practice writing these reports, we will add in tthree new features.

  • The concept of operational definitions (a review from our first few weeks of class)
  • The concept of post-hoc testing which is required for any One-Way Anova that has three or more “levels” of the independent variable
  • Note the measures of effect size and statistical power which come with the output tables. Where are these values and what do they mean?

This week we will use the same mini-report format you learned last week to explore the One-Way Anova. The point of a mini-report format is to build your ability to take a research question from start to finish, from creating the question and phrasing it as a testable hypothesis to choosing the right statistical test, generating the results and sharing those results in an APA formatted mini-report.  These mini-reports follow the layout of a typical journal article so you should be seeing that too.

  • Our goals here are the same as last week except that you will need to come up with a scenario in which you COMPARE AMONG 3 OR MORE GROUP MEANS.
  • Here, you will create a mock study and write up the results as a mini-paper.
  • You may use the scenario you thought up in the first discussion of the week, based on Paul Bloom’s TED.com talk, or you can use a different example.
  • We are going to share these mini-reports with each other as a discussion so everybody will be able to see each others’ examples and therefore have a better idea of how to run statistical tests and write up the results.  If you are stumped on how to write your post, look at what others have written but change the example hypothesis to one which interests you.

To complete this assignment, you are asked to generate a scenario that would require the use of a One-Way Anova, write your research question and matching hypothesis, generate fake/mock data, enter that correctly into SPSS, calculate and explain your results.  It would be best to write your replies in MS word, save them, and paste them into this discussion so you don’t lose any work.

The sections of this mini-report are
  1. Title
  2. (2 points) Brief introduction to the scenario (explain what you are comparing, what the variables are and what your null and alternative hypotheses are.
    1. List the independent variable’s name ____ how many levels it has _____ and what those levels are ______.  See this link if you are stumped. https://www.statisticshowto.datasciencecentral.com/probability-and-statistics/hypothesis-testing/anova/
      1. Provide an operational definition for the independent variable (yes, even categorical independent variables need operational definitions).
    2. List the dependent variable’s name and its operational definition_____.  Is this an interval or ratio scale measurement?
  3. (3 pts) Brief explanation of the methods
    1. explain the sample size, sampling method, and measurement methods you might use to have collected the mock data for your study.  Use about 20-30 data points per group.
    2. explain the descriptive statistics and charts which you might use to first analyze the data and check the sample for outliers and normality
    3. list your choice of alpha level and explain that choice.  Will you use the standard p<.05 level or a different criterion and why?
    4. Explain what post-hoc tests you used and why they were used.
  1. (3 pts) Results [Hint, see: this power-point presentation (click here) on running and interpreting One-Way Anova in SPSS]
    1. List the descriptive statistics for your data.  List any charts which accompany them.
    2. Paste in the Anova results table for your data
    3. Report the descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) and the inferential statistics (One-Way Anova results) in APA format. http://statistics-help-for-students.com/How_do_I_report_a_1_way_between_subjects_ANOVA_in_APA_style.htm
    4. Explain whether or not you rejected the null hypothesis and why

Use this NICE video (click here) to see how to calculate EFFECT SIZE for the One-Way Anova (Eta squared, partial Eta Squared).  This will also require that you use the steps in video 12.8.2 as the way to generate your One-Way Anova

Over the years, Rap and Hip-hop music and culture have helped give a voice to disadvantaged populations. So how can Rap and Hip-hop give a voice to influence climate change and social sustainability?

Thesis Statement Activity

PART 1:

Rewrite the following statement below. Then, very briefly explain what you changed in the rewrite to make it a better thesis statement. So, if there isn’t an argument, then make one up for the statement. These are all Crash (Movie) thesis statements.

1. One of the biggest cracks in America’s foundation is stereotypes. The film Crash shows how stereotypes tear apart community.

PART 2:

In the second part, write your current working thesis statement for your research paper. This can be a rough early draft.

Take a look at the video linked below, in which undergraduate students are unknowingly subjected to one of the worst academic presentations of their lives. Fortunately, the presenter was a fictitious and exaggerated caricature of real instructors. Unfortunately, many of those habits are quite common in our contemporary classrooms and workplaces!

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • organize your ideas, evidence, and arguments so far,
  • critically assess slide design, and
  • develop a twenty-slide presentation storyboard on your topic.

Preparing a Presentation

This module will be kept relatively light in terms of content so that you can focus your time and effort on the Presentation Storyboard activity.

The information page for that assignment contains plenty of direction, fodder for thought, and guidance on its own. Be sure that you have reviewed it (and the requirements/expectations for the assignment) before getting started with the Study section below so that you know why this week’s material is relevant.

It is increasingly common to complement public talks, lectures, and presentations with visual slides using Microsoft PowerPoint or other programs such as Google Slides or Apple’s Keynote. As we will see in the videos and resources linked below, too many slides, or too-cluttered slides, can have a horrendous effect. However, there are some tips, tricks, and principles that can help you to make sure that your own slides, if you use them, are effective.

Study

The video ‘Death by PowerPoint’ was developed in order to convince potential customers to try out a digital service called SlideBean. Even though it is a marketing video, it nicely captures some of the common problems recognized by both students and instructors when it comes to how slides are used at university and in the broader community. The second video takes a comedic look at some of the worst offenses that users of PowerPoint commit.

  • Life After Death by PowerPoint (opens in a new tab) (3:59 min)

Designing a Presentation Storyboard

To help you further prepare for the assignment, check out the following resources that respectively take a closer look at what is involved in creating a ‘storyboard’, and what the PechaKucha presentation format you will be using for the presentation actually looks like.

The PechaKucha Format

The PechaKucha format for presentations offers a limited structure that can help encourage designers to make strategic choices about what to show and tell in a presentation. Knowing about the PechaKucha format will help you to succeed on your presentation storyboard. Please examine the PechaKucha website here:

Describe the foundation that is most appropriate. What functions does this foundation serve for this commercial building? What are the challenges associated with building this foundation for this structure? What is the estimated cost for the foundation that you have recommended? Explain your rationale for your estimate.

Construction Management – Designing a Commercial Building

This week, you will submit your Final Project report. As a reminder, you are to take the role of a construction manager tasked with consulting with an architect who is in the process of designing a mid-rise, mixed-use commercial building in a congested urban environment near your community. The owner of this commercial building has specified that the ground and second floors should have sufficient space flexibility to allow for a variety of potential tenants. Possible ground floor tenants may include grocery stores, urgent care medical facilities, and similar service-oriented spaces that require larger floor to ceiling heights and that have challenging HVAC and electrical needs. Possible second floor tenants are anticipated to be law offices, investment brokers, and similar professional spaces. The upper floors will be residential condominiums. These spaces should be energy efficient and constructed so that all utility billing (domestic water, HVAC costs, etc.) can be charged to individual condominium owners. To the extent possible, the owner would like this project to be a green commercial property. To assist the architect in his design, you decide to write a report that answers his questions and includes your recommendations.
Your report should be approximately 1,200-1,500 words in length and include the following components:

Introduction
○ Describe the overall design of your suggested building. Your response should include floor area, number of floors, floor-to-floor height, provision for automobile parking, and project site area configuration.
○ Specify your location and climate.
○ What is the governing building code in your location? Who is the governing agency?
○ Describe the impact that your location and climate might have on the building’s design and construction process decisions.
○ Research similar commercial buildings that have been constructed near your community. What was the total cost associated with these construction projects? Use these costs to estimate the various component costs of this commercial building.

Foundation
○ Describe the foundation that is most appropriate.
○ What functions does this foundation serve for this commercial building?
○ What are the challenges associated with building this foundation for this structure?

Framing Material
○ Identify the framing material and structural system that you think would be most appropriate for this structure.
○ What are the construction advantages for your recommendation?
○ What is the estimated cost for the framing material that you have recommended? Explain your rationale for your estimate.

Mechanical Systems
○ What are the necessary mechanical systems for this structure? Describe the functions of each. Your responses should be specific to commercial and condominium spaces.
○ What are the equipment options available for these systems?
○ Which distribution system do you recommend? Why? What are the advantages of your recommendation?
○ What are the inspection requirements for these systems?
○ What alternate control systems can be used to provide energy efficiency in this commercial building?
○ What is the estimated cost for the systems that you have recommended? Explain your rationale for your estimate.

Electrical Systems
○ What are the necessary electrical systems for this structure? Describe the functions of each. Your responses should be specific to commercial and condominium spaces.
○ What are the inspection requirements for these systems?
