Prompt

Nobody wants to be considered a “failure.” The word suggests inability and incompetence, something that our culture frowns on. But sometimes a failure has unusual outcomes. For example, a high school student fails a history test on World War II. As a result, he has to retake the test. In doing so, he learns the importance of taking responsibility and studying ahead of time. In reviewing the material for the test, he might also be reminded of certain ideas that World War II exemplified—intolerance, passivity, and personal conscience.

Assignment:

Tell the story of a time that you faced failure in your life and learned something important from it. In your response, be sure to explain how you failed and the ways in which this failure led to an unusual outcome.

As Dewey made very clear, is not one of how to eliminate the school but of how to strike the right balance between formal and informal modes of education. And there was no doubt in his mind, and in ours today, that the balance has tipped disastrously onto the side of formal schooling.” (2017:16) In the light of what you have studied on this course, do you agree with Ingold?

In his short book, Anthropology and/as Education, Tim Ingold argues that, “The question, as Dewey made very clear, is not one of how to eliminate the school but of how to strike the right balance between formal and informal modes of education. And there was no doubt in his mind, and in ours today, that the balance has tipped disastrously onto the side of formal schooling.” (2017:16) In the light of what you have studied on this course, do you agree with Ingold?

Choose a specific monument, memorial, or artistic tribute which alludes to a historical event or person, and then write an analysis of the struggle for power that the monument represents.

Monuments and Memorials

In this essay, students will choose a specific monument, memorial, or artistic tribute which alludes to a historical event or person, and then write an analysis of the struggle for power that the monument represents. In addition to analyzing the statuary itself, and the rhetorical appeals that it makes to viewers, the paper should include a discussion of the problem, or struggle, that is embedded in the statue’s existence. What is being contested here? Who is empowered by it, and who is disempowered? What story is it telling us about history?

What does the world look like from your point of view? Describe where you are and the colors, shapes, and interesting views you can see. Imagine what you would be able to smell, hear, and/or taste and describe those things. How do you relate to the people, creatures, or objects around you?

Introduction

Imagine yourself as anything other who you are—anything other than a human. You could be an object (your car, your baby’s blanket, the big live oak in your back yard) or you could be an animal (the beloved and spoiled household pet). You can include a photo or image if you would like, but you do not have to do so. Write about your world as you imagine it, and include details about what your life is like.

THEN, once you have posted your reply, respond to TWO classmates’ posts. Tell them what you enjoyed and/or related to in their introductions. Be specific and thoughtful. Your response should be more than “good job.” Use this as an opportunity to get to know each other. IMPORTANT: FINALLY, to receive full credit for the discussion, respond to the classmates who have posted a reply to your post.

Review the relevant policies within the London Plan and highlight the ‘sources of inspiration’ when these can be identified. What sources or examples did the London Plan draw on for its policy? Are these ‘references’ explicit or implicit?

Compare the London Plan with affordable housing provision in New York City

1. Overall context and details of the exercise

The London Plan is a key strategic document through which the Mayor of London aims to shape development in the metropolitan area. The latest iteration of the Plan has recently been adopted after a process of consultation, during which various stakeholders commented on Sadiq Khan’s vision of ‘Good Growth’, and the Planning Inspectors made certain criticisms and asked for changes. Like his predecessors, Mayor Khan seeks to address London’s pressing local issues while preserving its status as a ‘global city’.

The Plan covers a broad range of issues – we invite you to explore one of two policy themes which relate closely to topics we have covered in this course. Once you are familiar with the London-based issues, you will then compare these policies with similar policies and issues in another city of your choice. We encourage you to think ‘outside the box’ and compare London with a city you would expect to be quite different – but how a very similar city takes a very different approach would also be fascinating. The selected city should be outside of the UK – if not, please seek permission from a course teacher.

2. Purpose of the exercise

The purpose of this exercise is twofold.

The first is to reflect on the benefits and challenges of comparison for a more global urban studies. You will thus have to present a short rationale or justification for comparing London with your other case study.

The second aim is to think comparatively about the selected urban policy. This will involve analysing policy in its various forms – both actual city plans, where available, and a wider ‘grey literature’ produced by a variety of stakeholders. In doing so, you will aim to put the policy in context, looking at the problems it seeks to address and why certain solutions are being proposed. While we do not expect you to become a policy expert in a single exercise, you are encouraged to think critically about why certain policy ideas are drawn on (e.g. what constitutes ‘best practice’, and how and why policy ideas circulate or are adopted in particular localities). We expect you to think about how London might benefit from learning from elsewhere.

3. Putting the report together

Your report should include the following elements:
• Clarify which theme you are focussing on and provide a context for it.
• Review the relevant policies within the London Plan and highlight the ‘sources of inspiration’ when these can be identified. What sources or examples did the London Plan draw on for its policy? Are these ‘references’ explicit or implicit?
• Raise some concerns about the sufficiency of this approach. Does it do justice to the issues London faces?
• Introduce your comparative city to emphasise that we can learn from elsewhere and review the approach in this city vis a vis that taken in London. Identify at least 2 main points of convergence or departure where the comparative city has tackled the issues differently, or with different outcomes.
• Provide some lessons for what London can learn from this analysis.

Was your colleague’s researched article appropriate for the personality measure being considered? Assess the personality instrument(s) suggested by your colleague. Would these measures provide reliable, valid, and culturally conscious results for the given scenario? Use your research to support your assertions. What other measure(s) would you suggest your colleague use in this situation?

Evaluating Mental Health Patients and Human Metrics Jung Typology Test

Read the Cohen, et al. (2013) and Wu, et al. (2007) articles and review the Evaluating Mental Health Patients  and Human Metrics Jung Typology Test websites.

For this discussion, you will be taking on the role of the intake counselor at a mental health facility. In this role, you will facilitate the evaluation of a client based on clinical personality assessments, mental status exam, and observations of the client to make recommendations to the treatment team consisting of the clinical psychologist, counselors, and case manager for the client. Carefully review the PSY615: Week Two Counseling-Based Personality Assessment Scenario (Links to an external site.).

In your initial post, examine the personality assessment instrument used in the scenario and research a peer-reviewed article in the University of Arizona Global Campus Library on this personality assessment. Using the required articles and websites as well as your researched article to support your statements, describe the standard use of this personality assessment. Based on the scenario, evaluate the reliability, validity, and cultural considerations inherent to the personality assessment used and comment on the relevance of these elements within the scenario. Analyze and describe some of the potential ethical issues which might arise from the use of this personality assessment in the given scenario. Provide information from your research regarding the use of the personality measure, and assess the value of other possible instruments that could be added to create a more complete assessment of the client in the scenario.

Guided Response : Review several of your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.
