In the mid-nineteenth century the trans-Mississippi west was home to some 350,000 Native Americans living in scores of distinct cultural groups. Many of these people lived according to their traditional ways and had little or no interaction with mainstream (people of European or African ancestry) Americans. By the 1880s, all of the American Indian peoples had been militarily defeated and placed on reservations, where they were often dependent on government handouts for survival. Indians who left the reservations were regarded as “hostiles” and were hunted down and either killed or returned to the reservations.

In answering this question, be sure to examine in some depth the experiences of at least one specific Native American culture from the trans-Mississippi West. There is some information in the textbook on a handful of Indian cultures, including the Lakota (or Sioux), the Comanche, the Apache, and the Nez Perce. You may want to pick one of these cultures to explore, but feel free to choose another if you like. For this assignment you will certainly need to do some outside research on the culture you decide to write about.

In answering this week’s discussion question you will want to touch on the following topics: (1) What was the nature of the Native American society you are examining in the mid-nineteenth century, in the period before significant contact with the mainstream culture? (2) How did the Indian culture you are discussing respond to mainstream American encroachment on their homeland? (3) What factors contributed to the military defeat of this culture/society? (4) You may also want to comment on what life was like for the people of this culture in the years after their military defeat.

Your point of view on this discussion question should also be supported by specific cited evidence from EACH of the following sources:

(1) Chapter Sixteen in the Give Me Liberty! textbook.

(2) Each of the primary sources posted in folders in the unit six area.

(3) Outside source(s) (websites, videos, etc.) you find related to a specific Native American culture

In this assignment, we’ll be producing an example of a genre of your choice. Working with your genre of choice, define what the genre is and how it works, using three examples of the genre. From that starting place, you’ll draft your own text within the genre. Once you’re done, you’ll write a short explanation of how your text belongs in the genre and how it matches up with your examples of the genre.

 

Questions to consider:

  1. Style—What is the tone of the genre? How does it appeal to readers?
  2. Design—What formatting choices define the genre? What types of design choices are possible? How are they used?
  3. Medium—Where is the genre found? How does that location/technology impact the format of the genre and access to it?
  4. Use—Who uses this genre? How do they use it? What types of things usually get talked about with this genre?

  2. What is the relationship in the society between male friendship and marriage?  In what way do they work together?  In what way, for example, must marriage in the premodern societies work to reinforce and support male friendship as the most important relationship in that society?
  3. Why is it that male friendship is given more importance in premodern and, to a certain extent, early modern societies?  What has made male friendship today diminished.  (You might ask how our society is structured in such a way that it encourages and promotes marriage (and the nuclear family) even as it requires that other relationships, including friendship, bow down to this relationship.)
  4. Think about how human relationships differed when society was structured differently.  How did male friendship feel, and how does this feeling differ from the feeling we might have today toward our friends?  Relatedly, how did marriage feel, and how did it differ from how it felt today?  Even though I keep using the term, “diminish,” this question really should be considered in terms of the quality of the affection rather than simply the intensity.
  5. In what way was friendship characterized by ritualistic behavior?  In what way was it considered a spiritual entity?  How does this compare and contrast to how marriage is considered by many (but not all) in our society?  Do we still have rituals around friendship?  If so, why not?  What do these rituals tell us about the way friendship felt or what it meant?
  6. How do physical acts of intimacy serve to express the intimacy between men?  Did earlier cultures have the same homophobia — that is, fear that certain behavior or actions in their relationship would signify as an inappropriate relationship?  Without such homophobia (or awareness of something called “homosexuality”), how are male friendships constructed differently?
