Which jar of tea (1) looked human (2) looked alive (3) had human elements (4) had mind of its own (5) had free will, on a 7-point scale (1= Keemun, 4= no difference, 7= Nilgiri) later combined into anthropomorphic perceptions index (α =.73).

Questions

Study1.

The participant completed the study individually in a lab with a one-way mirror and they were video recorded as they interacted with the stimuli. Each participant was exposed to three kinds of teas in small glass jars (all black and similar in texture), either with handwriting or typewriting labels depending on which condition he/she was in. They were then asked to evaluate the teas on a 5-item scale (favorable/positive/good/ pleasant/like), later combined into an evaluation index (α = .97). They finally reported aesthetic appeal in terms of the extent to which they agreed that the labels were aesthetically pleasing, attractive, and unique (1 = strongly disagree, 7 = strongly agree; α = .80).

Study 2.

Which jar of tea (1) looked human (2) looked alive (3) had human elements (4) had mind of its own (5) had free will, on a 7-point scale (1= Keemun, 4= no difference, 7= Nilgiri) later combined into anthropomorphic perceptions index (α =.73). Finally participants were asked which tea they would evaluate (1) more favorably (2) more positively, and, would be (3) more likely to purchase on a 7-point scale (1= Keemun, 4= no difference, 7= Nilgiri), combined into evaluation index (α = .89). They finally completed two manipulation check questions, in which they reported their agreement with the following statements of a 7-point scale (1 = strongly disagree, 7 = strongly agree; r =.75) (1) the label on the left looks like it is handwritten (2) the label on the right looks like a standard mechanical (typewritten) font.

Study3 Pretest

One hundred and seventy five individuals recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (53.1% female, 46.9% male; MAge = 34.98, SDAge = 11.23) were randomly assigned to assess one of the four product categories. The pretest assessed the extent to which they perceived the products to elicit an approach-avoidance response using the following items (How risky do you perceive the product to be?; To what extent would you pay attention to the message/picture on this product’s packaging to alert you to any harmful or damaging consequences you might experience by using the product; How cautious/vigilant you are when you interact with this product? 1=not at all, 7= very much). We also assessed the extent to which the participants perceived the product to be hedonic (How hedonic do you perceive the product to be? Hedonic is defined as “pleasant and fun, something that is enjoyable and appeals to your senses) and utilitarian (How utilitarian do you perceive the product to be? Utilitarian is defined as “useful, practical, functional, something that helps you achieve a goal. 1=not at all, 7= very much). The pretest results for the product category dyads used in study 3 and 4 will be presented accordingly.

STUDY 3

: Participants were told that the study involved the evaluation of a new product line of home sprays. Participants were shown an image of the spray (either cockroach killer or air freshener) with either a handwritten or typewritten font on the product label (see Appendix D for stimuli). They were then asked questions regarding their purchase likelihood, on a 7-point scale (How likely are you to purchase this product? 1= not at all likely, 7= very likely; I would feel good about buying this product. 1=strongly disagree, 7=strongly agree) later combined into purchase likelihood index (r=.84) Anthropomorphic perceptions were measured after the main dependent variable, on a 7-point scale (1= not at all, 7=extremely) by asking participants to indicate the extent to which the product represents or make them think of words indicative of (1) human (2) object (3) alive (4) machine . The “object” and “machine” items were reverse-coded and later combined with the other two items to create anthropomorphic perceptions index (α=.64). Finally, several other control variables (uniqueness, attractiveness, quality, authenticity, effort) were measured on 7-point scales (1=strongly disagree, 7=strongly agree) based on the notion that these could potentially underlie the handwritten font effect. Uniqueness was measured by two items (The spray looks unique to me; The spray is one-of-a-kind). Attractiveness was measured by two items (The spray is aesthetically pleasing; The spray looks attractive; r= .91). Authenticity was also measured by one item (The spray looks authentic). Quality was measured by the following item (The product is most likely of : 1=low quality, 7=high quality). Finally, effort was measured by two items (not effortful/effortful to produce, not difficult/difficult to produce).

Study 4.

Main study: One hundred and fourteen undergraduate students (45% male) participated in a between-subjects laboratory experiment for extra credit. Participants were randomly assigned to one product category condition, either hot sauce or jam. They were then asked to imagine the following scenario:

“You are going to a friend’s place for a get together (picnic with your friends), and your friends have asked you to pick up a hot sauce (jam) to go with the food you will be eating that evening. You stop at iBurn (Chatham jam and jelly shop), a speciality store that sells “all things spicy (jam and jelly)”. Here, they were provided images of the store. .

You enter the store and look around. There are hot sauces and spices (jams and jellies) on the aisles. Here, they also looked at a picture from inside the store.

You move towards the center store display and look at the range of hot sauce (jams). The store manager comes up to you and tells you that these are the most popular hot sauces (jams) in the store.

Now look at the four bottles of sauces (jars of jams) in front of you and spend a minute or two deciding which one to choose exactly like you would in the store.”

Prepare a research paper on a relevant topic in Satellite Communications. Are its conclusions compelling as judged by their significance and supporting arguments?

SatCom Systems for Health and Medical Care

Each student will prepare a research paper on a relevant topic in Satellite Communications. Its purpose is to give the student an opportunity to bring the information and concepts of the course to bear on a topic, issue, or project with which he or she is concerned. Research papers must
demonstrate graduate-level work, including writing ability. The test of a good paper is, “Are its conclusions compelling as judged by their significance and supporting arguments?”

Choose a scientific theory and write a proposal for how you intend to research it and argue on its behalf.

All Major Words are Capitalized Especially the First and Last Words

For this assignment you will choose a scientific theory and write a proposal for how you intend to research it and argue on its behalf.

Before you begin writing your proposal, it is imperative that you understand how to write a philosophy paper. First, read the excerpt by Peter Horban below (all of which can be found in the APUS library). Second, read my directions for how to format your paper as an argument. Third, read my directions for how to write your proposal.

Directions for how to write your proposal:

Once you know where you are going with your topic and have gathered the pertinent sources for your research you can begin your proposal. Start by outlining your intentions for the paper (see Supporting Materials), then write a brief overview of what you hope to accomplish in the paper, i.e. how you will defend the theory you chose, and finish with an annotated citation page.

This proposal should be 300 – 400 words, in MLA or APA format. Additionally, it should include an annotated bibliography of five resources. An annotated bibliography is a regular bibliography but with a couple of additional sentences after each entry that you write that describes how the resource will assist you in writing on your topic. It is expected that your topic and your resources will develop as you do your research and writing, and you may feel free to make adjustments as you go. You should also incorporate as much of our assigned reading/course materials as possible.

In addition to our course materials, a good place to get started is at the Philosophy Research Guide in the APUS Library (see link below). For your annotated bibliography, at least three of your references should be from the APUS Library, including two which are academically, peer-reviewed journal articles. In your annotation, make sure that you describe where you found them in the APUS Library.

When providing the four examples mentioned above, indicate the specific map you used and how they support your examples.

40 Maps that explain the Middle East

40 maps via the Resources section below, reading the short information provided. Pay attention to the diversity of the Middle East region—historically, politically, culturally, linguistically, religiously, and geographically.
Provide examples of diversity for each of the following categories—cultural, ethnic, religious, and political.

That means four total, one for each category.
For example, refer to any map that emphasizes ethnic differences (for example, Arabs, Persians (Iranians), Jews, or small splinter ethnic groups within states). Or another that emphasizes cultural differences like language usage, including dialects within languages. Yet another that distinguishes religious differences, and finally, another that distinguishes political differences (i.e. sectarianism, or political boundaries that seem to persist over time, or maps indicating strategic location for purposes of military importance, trade, or oil reserves?).

Notice that some of these differences overlap and can serve as examples across the four categories indicated.

When providing the four examples mentioned above, indicate the specific map  you used and how they support your examples.

Produce an infographic, or visual description of a political, legal, social, or economic policy problem facing Indigenous peoples in Canada; (2) at least 2 key policy developments in the chosen policy area to date; and (3) at least 2 key drivers that can explain why this policy challenge persists.

Infographic (20%)

Students will produce an infographic, or visual representation of information. The infographic will lay the groundwork for the final policy report. The infographic must include the following information: (1) a description of a political, legal, social, or economic policy problem facing Indigenous peoples in Canada; (2) at least 2 key policy developments in the chosen policy area to date; and (3) at least 2 key drivers that can explain why this policy challenge persists.

What enabling technologies were/are required to make this new technology possible? One thing you’re bound to find is that modern scientists “stand on the shoulders of giants”- their work is based on the work of the scientists that came before them. What relevant discoveries were needed to make this new technology possible?

W5 Assignment 2 – Outline – Solar Panels

Objective:  Organize your thoughts and the main points of your “Solar Panels” research for your final Assignment 3 PowerPoint (11-12 slide) presentation.

Assignment Instructions:  To help you complete Assignment 3: The Presentation, you will first submit an outline to organize your thoughts and main points. Your outline should be formatted a specific way and must contain the following elements as described below.

To prepare for this assignment, do the following:
-Read these directions carefully.
-Review the sample outline provided to you below.
-Read the grading criteria attached. The grading criteria is a detailed evaluation that I will use to assess your performance.  It also will help you understand what is expected of you as you prepare your assignment.

Be sure to add your name and course number to your outline.

The outline format:  Your outline must be formatted as described and exemplified in the example attached.  Note that this format will be assessed in your grade:
-Use an alphanumeric sequence
-Sections should be indented and aligned
-Follow the suggested order of the required elements
-Use brief but detailed and descriptive phrases

The required elements: Your outline should contain the following elements in this order:
I.    The Introduction: this section must contain

A.   The scientific name of your technology.

B.   The common name of your technology.  What do most people know it as?  Are there other names?

C.   What interested you about this particular technology

II.     The Body (Content Sections): this section should contain

A.  Background: include a general physical description of technology. What is it?

B.  A brief history of how the technology was developed (when/where was the research and development done, what was the need that drove people to develop it, timelines and significant people involved in it’s development)

C. The application (commercial/military, what industry/industries use it? how is it used?, etc.) of your technology

D.  A detailed investigation into how the technology works at the most fundamental level. This should include:

a. Does the device transform one type of energy to another (i.e. an automobile engine transforms the chemical energy of fuel into mechanical energy that results in the motion of the car)

b. What sub assemblies and components does the technology contain and how do they work? One approach you can consider taking here is to choose some elemental particle that the technology works with and describe how it is processed by the technology. Using the engine as an example, you could consider describing how a drop of fuel enters the engine, gets mixed with air, results in combustion, whose gases then expand, etc. This should be the most substantial portion of your final presentation.

c. What enabling technologies were/are required to make this new technology possible? One thing you’re bound to find is that modern scientists “stand on the shoulders of giants”- their work is based on the work of the scientists that came before them. What relevant discoveries were needed to make this new technology possible?

d. What is the future of this technology? What advancements are scientists trying to come up with and what will we want them to do?

III.     The Conclusion Section: this section should contain four to six points that sum up the main points from the body of the outline.

1. Start your conclusive section with one sentence summarizing some basic information about your chosen technology.
2. Summarize the way that it works, the history and future of it’s development.
3. Wrap up the conclusive section with a closing note that provides brief information about a unique fact your chosen technology.

IV.     Reference section: This is not just the reference page; rather, referencing should occur throughout the outline as it will in your presentation.  Therefore, your outline should include both a separate reference page containing a minimum of five (5) scholarly references or sources (do NOT use encyclopedias, Wikipedia, Investopedia, unknown, undated, or anonymous sources, such as brief articles from websites) listed in proper APA reference list format AND internal citations throughout the outline where appropriate. Please be sure to see the resources below for assistance regarding in-text citations and reference list formatting.
